Congratulations to Ethan Rainey and Taylor Whitehurst, who have won their opening matches in the TSSAA Class A/AA State Wrestling Tournament.
Rainey defeated Donavyn Walker of Chattanooga Central by pinfall (3:45). Rainey (23-2) will face Xion Dixon of Cascade (13-12) in the quarterfinals early Friday afternoon.
Whitehurst defeated Maggie Kite of Science Hill by pinfall (4:26). Whitehurst (22-4) will face Haley Roberts of Tullahoma (7-4) in the semifinals later Friday.
Both wrestlers are still alive in the championship bracket, Rainey in the final eight and Whitehurst in the final four (girls).
Rhiley Burton (24-8) lost his opening match to Jaren Thames of Whitwell by pinfall (3:09), but is still competing on the consolation side of the bracket. His next match will be against Heath Owens (24-20) of Elizabethton. The consolation bracket continues until a third and fifth place state finalist is determined.
